Join the Nike+ Human Race 10k - August 31st

If you do not know about Human Races let me give you a quick background: communities will have a race to support community nonprofit organizations and they are called a Human Race because a bunch of different charities are getting together to make your neck of the woods better place...in sum, a lot of fun and a unique opportunity to raise funds for your local hospice, after-school programs, etc. things that you might often overlook when thinking about charitable donations.

That being said...Nike is doing an INTERNATIONAL Human Race to raise money for 3 charities: ninemillion, lance armstrong's livestrong, and wwf (environmental conservation).

What is a 10k - 6.2 miles

Do you have to run the whole time - NO! (walk it, walk/run it, stroller it - do it!)

A race with after party is being held at 25 international cities - register here

What if I don't want to do a race but still want to participate - then run in ye ole virtual world with Nike+ - register at the same place (see link above)

What is Nike+ - If you have a nano then all you need to do is purchase this for $30 (you can get it at Sports Chalet, Target, running stores...lots of places), you do not need fancy Nike+ shoes you can use one of these lacelids or a shoe key pocket (I LOVE my lacelids and you can order them in bulk and hand them out to your friends which is my favorite practice) and run in your ascics, new balance, mizunos, whatever... another alternative is to buy the Nike SportBand (however, I am not hearing the best reviews for durability so I would recommend the nano route, plus you more than likely listen to music when you run anyway.)

How to train - nike+ is providing training plans and a free My 1st 10k coach run available on their website when you register or check out this Couch to 5k plan (I love the couch plans and use them with beginner runners all the time) and add walking to your plan. Count on doing a run/walk plan for the event or a brisk walk only...there is more than enough time to be ready...it just requires hitting the pavement.

As for me, Ellie and I went on our training run last night. It was not great, we ended up caught in the dark and walking back, but we did it!
